The Unforgiven are a military organization of Camaeline soldiers dedicated to defending the Skaldi border until their deaths. They are mostly former members of the Allies of Camlach who survived the Skaldi invasion. Seeking redemption for their sins, they vowed to guard the border forever. They believe that when they let the Skaldi through the passes, they lost their honor in Camael's eyes. They are also known as the Black Shields because all of their shields were painted black. They have numerous forts along the border and secret passages through the mountains.
The Unforgiven answer to Phedre, as Kushiel's Chosen, because Kushiel is the lord of punishment. They feel that guarding the border forever is Kushiel's punishment for them on earth. Phedre visited them during Kushiel's Chosen, seeking the missing guardsmen of Troyes-le-Mont. Later, it was her idea to use them to break Percy de Somerville's siege of the City of Elua. Ysandre rode through their ranks to confront Percy before the walls of the City.
Maslin de Lombelon was sent to spent time among the Unforgiven after beating Raul L'Envers y Aragon badly in a duel.
